Rooney may miss run-in

Sir Alex Ferguson has suggested Wayne Rooney is unlikely to play any further part in Manchester United's bid for the Premier League title.

Rooney, who has recently been struggling with an ankle injury, missed United's 3-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur after picking up a groin problem in training on Thursday.

United opted not to risk the striker against Spurs and Ferguson believes it may be at least two weeks before the England international is fit again.

Ferguson will continue to monitor his top scorer's fitness, although Rooney should certainly be back in time to be part of England's World Cup campaign.

"It's difficult to say," Ferguson told Sky Sports when asked if Rooney would play again this season.

"Groin injuries are groin injuries and I think it will maybe take two or three weeks to be honest with you.

"We'll try and give him every chance, obviously, and Wayne will be desperate to play himself, so we'll just have to wait and see."

Patrice Evra was forced to come off during the second half against Spurs after being sick on the pitch and Ferguson confirmed some of his players had been suffering with illness.

However, the United boss is confident that the likes of Evra will be back in rude health in time for next weekend's trip to Sunderland.

He added: "We had a bit of sickness with two or three players today, but we've got eight days to recover, so hopefully we'll be okay.

"Evra just felt it yesterday, but he felt okay to play and it just happened. Maybe the heat brought it on a little bit, it was a warm day.

"I don't know what's happened, whether it's something he ate or is something going around the place."

Possible mind games, bet he is ok for Stoke.

If that proves to be the case then at least we know what we've got to work with and there's no will he/won't he be fit.

Sickened to hear that news

Out for the season then, groin injury.... Regardless of today's result, going to be a huge huge miss, Sunderland away is NOT going to be easy, and we definitely lack a goal poacher in the box without Rooney.

Nice to see him walking unaided today.

The fact that SAF has made a tactical decision to start with Rooney alone up top to support the midfield cant then IMO ne used against Berba. He's not going to tear apart Chelski directly but I do believe the way that he has been linking the ball from the middle to the Nani & Valencia production line. A freakish number of Rooneys headers may have come from Valencia crosses but the great majority of the link up play that gave Valencia the chance to cross came from Berbatov.

Well, if he's (Berba) ever going to do it, NOW is the time! We have some tricky fixtures ahead!!

Everyone calm the fcuk down an stop actin like scousers. Berba is playin some of the best football of his Utd carear at the minute, in young Macheda we have one of europes finest, desperate, given the chance to prove lightening can strike twice an that he can make up for all the time he's lost to injury this season.

It is a huge blow, but this is exactly why we have a squad. Berbatov is a 30 million pound striker and this is his big chance to step up. Hopefully the team can do a job for Wayne so when he comes back we'll still be fighting for the big titles. It's a team game, and the team need to stand up and be counted.
