Fletcher - Cup win was crucial

Darren Fletcher hopes Manchester United's Carling Cup success over Aston Villa can be the springboard to more trophies this season.

The Red Devils battled back from a goal down to claim a fine 2-1 win over Villa at Wembley thanks to substitute Wayne Rooney's second half header.

United are locked in the Premier League title race with Chelsea and currently have the upper hand in their UEFA Champions League clash with AC Milan.

With two major trophies still up for grabs, Fletcher, who has been in fine form for the team this season, hopes their win on Sunday can be the start of something special this season.

"It's a great occasion and I think people speak about getting to cup finals, but the only way you enjoy them it to win," said Fletcher ahead of Scotland's friendly with Czech Republic.

"I've been in a couple of cup finals that we've lost and it's not the best so I think the joy of not losing in the best thing really, because it means you've enjoyed your day.

"It's important for Manchester United to win these competitions and hopefully it'll kick-start us in the Premier League and the Champions League."

Fletcher has been in blistering form for United so far and he believes staying grounded and not believing the hype is the way to maintain consistency.

"It's going well. Playing in a number of games helps," he continued. "I'm maturing as a player and all these different factors help.

"The team are starting to find a bit of form. We're a team full of confidence and hopefully that'll help us for the rest of the season.

"It's a team game and I'm just a small cog in that. It's nice when people take notice of you.

"I'm just trying to concentrate on putting in what's expected of me. My attitude has been stay in the team and help the team win."
