Gibson extends United contract

Manchester United midfielder Darron Gibson has agreed a three-year contract extension at Old Trafford.

The Republic of Ireland international broke into the Premier League champions' side on limited occasions last season and gave flashes of his ability.

Gibson is now keen to earn increased opportunities in Sir Alex Ferguson's plans after putting pen-to-paper to tie him to the Red Devils until 2012.

"I am very happy to commit my future to United," he told United's official website.

"Last season I enjoyed every opportunity and when I got my chance I wanted to prove what I could do. I hope to continue that this season."

Ferguson rates Gibson highly and is pleased the 21-year-old has committed his future to United.

"Darron was one of the young players who emerged last season as a United first-team player," said the United boss.

"His appearance ratio did not really reflect the high regard in which we hold him, as he has constantly worked hard to challenge for a first-team spot."
