Must say that I'm a little surprised as I was fully expecting us not to renew his contract and see him leave on a free.

The only conclusion that I can come to is that Berbatov is on his way out and keeping Owen at the club gives us a little depth that we'd have lost if we were to lose two strikers.

If Berbatov does leave, and we bring Welbeck back, that's the latter, Owen, Rooney and Hernandez as our four strikers. And no extra cost to the Glazers, of course :?

I was under the impression Macheda would be back with United next season (unless we get an offer for him I guess?)

Anyway, hopefully our younger strikers can all learn something from Owen. (And that probably includes Rooney and Chicharito...)

Which I don't really mind if we invest it in other areas or if Berbatov is used as part exchange for someone like Modric.

Towards the end of the season it was apparent that Rooney and Hernandez would be first choice so having Owen as backup or to play in some of the smaller games might not be such a bad thing and is a role that I can't imagine Berbatov being too happy at doing. I still think that Wellbeck and Macheda aren't ready for the first team just yet.

To be fair to Owen, I think he has done well when he's been given a chance and Fergie has said that he'll try and give him more games next season. If he can stay fit and start hitting the back of the net regularly then I'm not too worried although that was kind of what I was expecting when he joined and that hasn't really happened so far.

I don't mind having Owen as back-up playing in the domestic cups, 20-30 minute runouts from the bench etc., but what if there's an injury to Rooney? I wouldn't want to be relying on Owen (himself extremely injury-prone) to spearhead a title challenge, and I can't imagine he and Hernandez would make a very great pairing... unless, of course, we buy someone like Schneider who can play just off a single striker.

It sounds like Berbatov wants to stay though, and I think there is still a role for him - particularly against teams that park the bus. Depending on what signings we make in midfield, we might also be better equipped to play 4-4-2 without depending on one striker coming deep to prevent us being overrun in the middle.

Even then I still can't see him being in the starting line up for the bigger games, but I don't think he would leave United just because he was on the bench, and I don't think Fergie is aiming to force him out. If we do cash in then it's only likely to be because someone wants him as a makeweight.

I would be sad to see him go, but if it meant Welbeck getting a regular chance to bring his form from Wearside to OT it just might be worth it.

Irrelevant if Berba wants to stay, is SAF's decision.

Do you think Fergie wants him out though?

Some people have made that inference but as far as I can tell it is solely based on not making the CL final bench, which has nothing to do with anything (I don't think Fergie wants to get rid of Rafael, Evans or O'Shea either).

Judging by how much he played in the second half of the season then I'd say that Fergie doesn't have him firmly in his first team plans.

If we didn't have financial constraints then I'm sure Fergie would be delighted to have a player like Berbatov to come off the bench but in reality having a player that could possibly be a £12m-£15m bargaining chip to bring in a quality midfielder then I'd have to say that if I was in Fergie's position then I'd be selling him/swapping him if the deal was right.

Not sure why Rafael, Evans or O'Shea are relevant to this subject? Evans and O'Shea are great backup at the moment and wouldn't fetch anywhere near the price we'd get for Berbatov and if we did lose either of those two then they'd need replacing and would just be a like for like transfer. Rafael definitely has a future at the club and will get games along with Fabio especially as Evra isn't getting any younger.

Purely because like Berbatov they weren't on the bench for the Champions League final, because Fergie could only name 7 subs. But unlike them, the media seem to think that the fact Berba wasn't picked is a "snub" which means he is on his way out.

I do think Fergie wants him out and that it was a snub. When Owen makes the bench ahead of you it says a lot.

Think of it this way, we now have a squad size issue and there is no room to carry people, which is why Hargreaves couldn't be given pay as you play deal. This is also the last chance to get any cash for Berba before he goes on a free.
