The time was probably right, but he'll be a massive loss. Probably the best English player of his generation, and one of the top 5 midfielders in the world over the last 15 years. An incredible talent, and the story of how on Saturday 6 Barcelona players fought over who got his shirt shows just how highly he was rated throughout Europe. Will leave a huge hole to fill.

My instinct says he's probably chosen the right time to call it a day, but it's still very sad to hear confirmation. Probably the most talented English player of his generation, who was shamefully wasted by his country - thankfully to the benefit of his club. Different class. And great that he'll stay involved at the club. Thanks for everything, Scholesy.

I agree, I think the time was right for him but he'll be greatly missed.

Obviously the priority in the summer will be to replace him especially with the loss of Hargreaves out of the middle of the park as well. There's talk of Rodwell, Young and Modric being possible targets but the only player that I think would add real class to our midfield and would potentially be open to a move is Wesley Sneijder. I'm sure he'd cost a lot but if there was any chance we could sign him and the funds were available this summer then he's the player that we should be going for (maybe as a part exchange for Berbatov?).

Thanks for all the memories Scholsey (too many to even list!), delighted to hear there will be a testimonial in August.

Great tribute to Scholes here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UKFuBWky3xU

The ones against Bradford and Villa are the ones I particularly remember but I'll never forget that one against Barcelona :)

It's sad to see him go but nobody can go on forever. What a class act both on and off the field, thanks for all the great years of service you will be missed!

One of those players the likes of which we will never see again. An absolute pleasure to have seen him play.

Best central midfielder I've ever seen.

The goal that sticks out in my mind is the one against Barca a few years ago at Old Trafford. But there have been so many.
