Post Premier League to wait for trophy presentation
http://www.unitedonline.co.uk/news-and- ... hp?id=3759

Quote:
Manchester United will not receive the Premier League trophy should they win the title this weekend.

United need only one point from their final two games of the season to secure a record 19th league crown.

The first of those matches is at Blackburn on Saturday, which ends just before the FA Cup final between Stoke and Manchester City starts at Wembley.

BBC Sport understands that whatever the results this weekend, the trophy will be presented at the final game.

Manchester United close their campaign with a home match against relegation-threatened Blackpool on 22 May.

Sir Alex Ferguson's team all but secured their fourth Premier League crown in five years with a 2-1 victory over title rivals Chelsea on Sunday.

The result leaves United six points clear of the London club.

Should United wrap up the title as expected, they will overhaul the record of 18 titles they share with Liverpool.

Manchester United can make it a memorable double should they triumph in the Champions League final against Barcelona at Wembley on 28 May.

For once found myself agreeing with Alan Green that it's a joke to be playing PL fixtures right before the FA Cup Final. Couldn't they have been switched to Sunday, at least?

Hopefully the only man lifting a trophy on Saturday will be Ryan Shawcross then...

This is a total non story, the trophy is ALWAYS presented at the last home game if there is one left after the title is won. It has never been any different.

Re having games on the same day as the FA Cup, they couldn't pull all the games on a Sunday as then Sky wouldn't be able to meet their contractual broadcast obligations.

This is the same idiot Alan Green who wrote a whole column on the FA Cup being on the same day as PL games without realising it was due to the Champions League and said that it would now happen every season.

With regards the trophy presentation you're right it's a non-story (although I hadn't noticed!)

As for playing PL games on Cup Final day - Sky Schmy. If the FA puts the FA Cup final on May 14th and orders the games to be moved it's hardly Sky's fault they can't meet their contractual obligations, any more than they could have prevented games being snowed off this winter? Or have I misunderstood how the FA, PL and Sky hammer these things out (probably). I guess I'm just surprised that it's happened this way as opposed to moving the PL fixtures. (They can move the last day of the season to a Sunday...)

That said, given United are at Wembley for the CL final, I'm glad they didn't try anything more drastic like shifting games to midweek - a nice sensible one game a weekend schedule to the end of the season is definitely a good thing.

Thanks for snapping me out of the notion that Green might have started talking sense, anyway ;)

Sky would sue the PL for not getting the amount of televised games that they are contracted to get at the right time slots etc. The PL already messed this up with the radio packages and are facing having to pay money back etc for not enough games being at the right times for the various like PL radio games. The FA is no financial position to re-emburse the PL/Sky should games have to be moved for the FA Cup.

The reason they move all the games on the last weekend to the sunday is in order to meet Sky's contracted number of matches. All games have to be played at the same time for reasons of fairness and Sky are not allowed to show games between 2.30pm and 5.15pm on a Saturday - so the only way to meet Sky's criteria is to move them all to sunday. Sky still lose money as 4 games at once obviously has less viewing figures than 4 games all at diff times, but that is built into the contract from day 1. The FA Cup issue is not in the contract as it arose long after the PL/ Sky deal was signed.

The FA have also already lost a fortune to the FL, having to pay them off after they double booked Wembley for the playoffs and had to break the agreement to have the league 1 and 2 playoffs there. Not only did the FA lose 2 matches of income at Wembley that they badly need, but they also have to pay for the games to be hosted at Old Trafford instead.

Do the FA get any revenue from ticket sales for the CL Final or have a say in ticket prices?

No of course not, why would they?

The FA spends a fortune bidding for the final to be at Wembley for prestige reasons, but they essentially give the stadium to uefa to run their cup from after that and have no say at all. Tickets posted out from uefa in zurich not London.

The FA also only get the same ticket allocation as 'part of the football family' as the Spanish or Italian FAs.
